Mestiza Power

 

Written and directed by Concepción León Mora and performed by Sa’as Tun of Yucatán, Mexico

Mestiza Power is a poetic, powerfully performed and beautifully-directed new work from Yucatán, Mexico. Through a series of monologues based on personal experiences and interviews with street vendors in Merida, the artists recount childhood memories, educational experiences and stories ranging from domestic violence to street life to mystical practice. Mestiza Power paints a powerful portrait of the faces, thoughts, voices, struggles and dignity of today’s Mayan women.

The Alston/Bannerman Fellowship Program is committed to advancing progressive social change by helping to sustain long-time activists of color. The program honors those who have devoted their lives to helping their communities organize for racial, social, economic, and environmental justice. The program provides resources for organizers to take sabbaticals for reflection and renewal.

YOUTH FILM SHOWCASE: CULTURES OF PEACE

Saturday, November 17th @ 11 a.m.

From small gestures of kindness to heroic acts of survival and healing after
the atrocities of war and genocide, this showcase will sample and celebrate
peace-minded short videos by local youth 18 and under. There will also be an
opportunity for audience discussion with the young filmmakers.

This showcase has been curated by the Peace Art Film Collective, a partnership
between University of Massachusetts Communication students and the UMass Asian
Arts and Culture Program.
